A Skeletal Cheetah with a Dwarfed Cub Stares at Family of Cheetahs Gorging

Poem by Donna O’Connell

Under the cool of acacia a muscled cheetah and two fat cubs gulp chunks from a carcass of Grant’s gazelle.

Across the dirt road a wasted cheetah mother and one shriveled cub sit on sharp haunches and stare under a searing sun. No snarls, no rancor here.

Cheetahs do not challenge another cheetah’s kill. Ones bound to watch others thrive. The starving mother and cub will shrink away.

Africa Is The Mother
Who Lies In The Grass
Book of Poems, by Donna O’Connell
In this collection, O'Connell continues her patented aura of mystery and permeability within the landscape of Africa.

Layered with images of Olaf Kruger's surrealist woodcuts, this collection digs deeper into the life of Africa and the social animal.
